A clunk or click from the front of a Model 3 when you turn at low speed — say, pulling into a parking spot — is one of the most common jobs that walk through the shop door. The mistake owners make is assuming it's a wheel bearing or brake issue. Nine times out of ten on these cars it's a control arm bushing, and the test that confirms it takes two minutes.
The symptom
- A dull clunk or knock from the front as you turn the wheel at low speed (driving slow, not moving fast)
- Sometimes a creak over speed bumps, sometimes only when the wheel is loaded on one side
- Usually worse when the steering is at near-full lock, or when reversing out of a driveway
The three suspects
1. Upper or lower control arm bushing wear (the overwhelming favorite). The Model 3's control arm bushings are a known wear item — they develop play as they age, especially on the lower rearward arm. This produces exactly this low-speed clicking / clunk sound. Tesla replaces these constantly under warranty.
2. Ball joint wear. Felt as a sharper clunk, and usually at the very end of travel. Separate test (below) splits them.
3. Half shaft / CV joint. Higher-speed clicking that gets faster as you accelerate or turn — a rhythmic click-click-click, not a single knock. Very different sound.
The test that tells you in 2 minutes
Jack up the front, support it on stands, and grab each front wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock. Rock it side to side — up and down, then back and forth.
- Back-and-forth play at 9/3 o'clock (in-out, not up-down) → control arm bushing. That's your culprit.
- Up-and-down play at 12/6 o'clock → wheel bearing or ball joint, not the bushing.
- Clean in both directions → it's not the suspension bushings; move to the ball joint test: with the wheel off, grab the lower arm and feel for free play at the joint that screws into the knuckle.

The fix
Confirmed bushing? It's a control arm replacement. The Model 3 lower rearward arm is the usual offender. Replace the arm (bushing included) rather than pressing a bushing alone — less labor, and you get fresh rubber.
Remove the wheel, support the knuckle, unbolt the two arm mounts, and pull the arm. Reassembly is the reverse; torque the arm-to-subframe bolts with the suspension loaded (wheels on the ground), not hanging, or you'll stretch the bushings and be back in the shop in six months.

Shop tip: always replace the arm on both sides at once. If one bushing is gone, the other is weeks behind it — don't do this job twice.

Is it safe to drive? Yes, generally — it's a wearing bushing, not an imminent failure, but it'll only get looser and noisier. Don't let it go for thousands of miles.
